Kama Sutra is a tale of love, with all the rivalry, fights and intrigue of a classic fairy tale. It is the story of Maya who is raised at a royal palace. She is later taught to be a concubine - a highly trained servant to the King, who lives within the King's harem. Maya grows up with the Princess. The two girls are friends while growing up and learning together. Later however, their own rivalry and different castes (Indian social classes) separate them. On the night of the princesses wedding there is a party and Maya is serving food. Maya is attracted to the Prince and takes some sweet food to his rooms. The Prince is attracted to Maya since she is the most beautiful girl in the Palace. And on this evening, the eve of his wedding, he and Maya make love. However, somebody spies on them and tells somebody else. The next day the truth comes out and Maya is disgrace and thrown out of the Palace. Maya meets a sculptor who is making statues for the King. He introduces Maya to the woman who runs a school teaching women about the Kamasutra. Maya and the sculptor for end the. The sculpture makes a statue for the King modelled on Maya. However the sculpture does not want to give in to his feelings towards Maya, despite telling the that he can work much better in a belated state of infatuation. Meanwhile, the King sees the statue modelled on Maya and offers a reward for finding this beauty. He sends out messengers proclaiming the reward. Soon someone recognises Maya and reports her identity to the Palace. Her love for the sculptor not reciprocated, she agrees to enter the King's harem. In the Palace, Maya witnesses the life of a decadent King who does not, or cannot, face his responsibilities towards his people as a ruler. We see the demise of a kingdom based in the extreme decadence, the neglect of duties, and the narcissism of one person holding all power. Kama Sutra is above all, a film about love. Maya seems to lose the love of her life. Yet, after a seemingly tragic ending, she is not bitter as some people become. Maya emerges having experienced the true meaning of love and says that now she can walk into the future with her heart open.
